Public Speaking
10 Tips for writing or delivering a speech
  1. Plan your speech. The average speaker says 100 words per minute. Type it up double spaced and in written in a large font.
  2. Know your audience. Be aware of exactly who the audience will be and write your speech to them.
  3. Find your voice. Write your speech in a conversational tone and include techniques such as: pausing, repetition, making eye contact, using voice variation and projection, speaking slowly and clearly.
  4. Grab your audience at the start. Always assume you have to grab your audience in the first 30 seconds or you'll lose them. Explain what you’re going to be speaking about and create enthusiasm for what you have to say.
  5. Smile.
  6. Make eye contact with or near the audience.
  7. Use slides to simply SUPPORT your speech. You shouldn’t need to look at them. Use photos, dot points or headings but not clumps of text.
  8. Move around the stage.
  9. Relax. You know you’re nervous but no one else needs to.
  10. Practise, Practise, Practise.
